Emergency Assistance: Fundraising for Rehabilitation at “Rostok Zhizni” for Mikhail Kurilenko

#KurilenkoMikhail needs our help. The boy is only 5 years old, but he has already endured so much.

Here is a plea from Mikhail’s mother:

“My son, Mikhail Kurilenko, was diagnosed at birth with organic CNS damage, bilateral pyramidal insufficiency, and delayed psychomotor and speech development.

When he was five months old, we noticed that the baby, besides showing lethargy and irritability, did not react to toys, did not make eye contact, and had poor reactions to light. We consulted an ophthalmologist, who diagnosed him with congenital cataracts in both eyes. At seven months, Mikhail underwent two surgeries to remove the cataracts at the Kharkiv City Clinical Hospital No. 14 named after Professor A.L. Hirshman. The first surgery on the right eye was in July 2016, and the second one on the left eye was in September 2016. Unfortunately, vision was not fully restored as the eyes were not ready for lens implantation. To fully restore his vision after the age of 3, Mikhail requires several more surgeries to implant lenses in both eyes and subsequent stages of treatment.

Mikhail’s condition has not improved. He is constantly monitored by neurologists at the Kharkiv Regional Children’s Hospital No. 1. The consequences of organic CNS damage have led to delays in motor and psycholinguistic development. Mikhail cannot walk, sit independently, or play with toys. He remains mostly in a lying or semi-sitting position due to underdeveloped muscle tissue.

He has also been examined by specialists at the Kharkiv Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital, undergoing various tests including ECHO-KD, NSG, and EEG, which revealed decreased functional activity of the brain cortex. He was diagnosed with subcompensated hydrocephalus, delayed psychomotor development, and moderate anemia.

In 2017, Mikhail was examined at the Kharkiv Interregional Specialized Medical-Genetic Center for Rare Diseases. Geneticists observed him for a month, conducted multiple tests, and noted changes in triglyceride and calcium levels in his blood.

On December 29, 2017, Mikhail underwent an MRI at the Kharkiv City Clinical Hospital of Emergency and Urgent Medical Care named after Professor O.I. Meschianinov, where he was diagnosed with CNS malformations, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, and cerebellar vermis, spastic tetraparesis, ataxic syndrome, and primary speech development delay.

Medication was prescribed, and doctors recommended rehabilitation, massage, physical exercises, and hippotherapy. When Mikhail turned three, two more surgeries were performed to implant lenses at the same hospital. At the age of three, Mikhail also began experiencing seizures and was treated at the Kharkiv Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital, where he was prescribed comprehensive treatment.

Despite these efforts, Mikhail’s condition did not improve, and the only hope lies in continued rehabilitation. From media reports, I learned about the hippotherapy rehabilitation center “Rostok Zhizni” in Ukraine, where we have already completed two rehabilitation courses. The treatment provided at the center has shown positive results. Mikhail began to hold his head well, sit, and even crawl a bit. We would very much like to continue his rehabilitation there so that he can eventually walk.

We are reaching out for help as we are unable to gather the required amount ourselves.”

We urge all kind-hearted people to help Mikhail!
